Raven Saga vol 1 by Chihiro Howe

Wen lives in a little cottage deep in the forest with her grandmother Monde. For Wen though it's also a prison, her grandmother refuses to allow her to leave and has even put up a magical barrier to keep her their. Wen knows its for her safety but since her grandmother won't tell her why Wen is less and less willing to follow the rules. One afternoon a bright light envelopes her and while she doesn't understand why she knows she has to follow it, without even thinking she crosses the magical barrier where the light leads her to a young man sleeping half naked in the forest! Fearing he's injured she brings him back to the cottage not knowing she's taken the first step in her own grand adventure!

I love stories like this! Wen, Corliss, and Theo (Corliss's friend who is a talking bird) get to meet up with all sorts of easily recognizable fairy tale characters who so far are not as endearing as we remember them to be. The Pied Piper sells them out to Jack the Giant Killer who may or may not traffic in humans. I think what I liked about these existing characters being a little twisted is it really allows Wen and Corliss to stand out as the true MCs of their story. Well-known characters may be galavanting across the pages but their stories, at least so far aren't overpowering Wen and Corliss's.

This was honestly just an adorable fairy tale and I am definitely going to be continuing this series!

As always thanks the NetGalley and  Webtoon Book Group for the eArc!
