We have to have the talk...The Cozy Talk

I was going to write this a few days ago, but I decided not too. Who needs to hear my opinion on the topic of what is or is not cozy? Apparently a lot of people do. And fun fact there is no such thing as a "cozy" anything. The term cozy as a subgenre supposedly refers to any work that has a smaller cast of characters, a smaller town, and is mostly positive. This is from the writersdigest.com. And I call bs because cozy is subjective. What is "cozy" to you isn't to me, and it shouldn't be. My cozy is Ong Bak 2 and Cameron Johnston novels. When I need to be wrapped in a warm hug I don't reach out for some book that is super positive and upbeat and reach for violence and gore. Am I weird? No, there are plenty of people out there like me with a ton of reasons for finding comfort in a positive story that also happens to have a vampire that eats people.

We have established that Cozy is subjective I hope? Good. Let's than discuss that original definition because guess what there is a cozy genre and it is actually super important. First of all, you don't have to read, watch, or play anything that falls under this genre. Let's just establish this right of the gate. So help me every god ever if Mortal fucking Combat comes out with a Cozy Game good for them; You. Do. Not. Have. To. Play. It. Did we establish that raining on someone else's parade just because you don't like it makes you a dick? Yay!

Moving on.

The definition earlier isn't incorrect, by any means, because humans need comfort and that's what Cozy games, books, and TV Shows offer. Especially right now. People are losing their rights, humans are being kidnapped off the streets, thanks to the government shut down people will lost access to fucking food. I could go on. Cozy doesn't just offer the "positive and upbeat" in many cases cozy offers people an escape into a world where not only is none of this happening, but they can afford to live. Animal Crossing didn't become as popular as it did during the Pandemic for no damn reason. Cozy reads? An escape into a place where problems are solved quickly and without pain. People need that and if you don't that's cool. That's actually fucking awesome and seriously we should talk because I clearly am not someone who goes to Animal Crossing for an escape from the horrendous world, we find ourselves in. But I will defend anyone who enjoys this specific sub genre the same way I defend those who prefer some other genre no matter what it is.

Cozies, however, I will defend to the death. Why? Because it is a genre associated with women. It is a genre that when people say, "Cozies are a disease" (the thing that prompted this whole ass post) is basically saying that what women enjoy is a disease. That we once again have encroached on male territory and how fucking dare we ask for something that fits what we'd like to read/play/watch. And ya know what? Fuck off.
