A Light For the Dead to Follow by Rebecca Crunden

On the run from the King for reasons he has opted not to make clear to her Eolina stumbles across an elaborate tomb. She thinks she finally may be safe from the King's men when an enormous beast attacks her. Knowing she'll die soon she does her best to fight the thing but in the end knows pointless, that is until a blinding white light bursts forth killing the beast and to her astonishment bringing the men in the tomb back to life. The men explain that they themselves are on the run from their immortal queen so with little other options Eolina joins with Fin the leader of the immortal knights to bring justice to a corrupt world.

Rebecca nails it once again! This was such a great short story about the wealth gap and corrupt leaders who have zero concern about their people.

Eolina is an absolutely wonderful MC. It may seem like she's just going with the flow for much of the book, but she's clearly making informed decisions based on the input of those around her. What I really love about her though is that she's not like stupidly positive about everything. She's hopeful, given her circumstances and the world's circumstances she could have been a very different character positively reckless or doom and gloomy, and still reckless and she is neither of these things. I love her for that.

World-building is excellent as usual, it never ceases to amaze me that Crunden can put together a complete world with no gaps in so little space. I'd say it's a gift but it's fairly obvious it's hard freaking work.

Finally, and come on you all knew this was coming I *love* that the story is set around a necromancer! This very much felt like Sabriel to me and I loved that a lot! I also enjoyed that it isn't just people she's able to bring back but she's able to heal the earth as well. That last part seems like a no-brainer for a necromancer but it's not used a lot so I love seeing it!

Highly recommend this wonderful short story about standing up for what's right even if it means your own story ends.
