Barrow Maid by Dani Finn
One evening Crela creeps from her barrow finding two men trying to break in, she silently stalks them killing them both, their corpses will serve as the perfect meal for months. Its at this point she realizes she's not alone, a young woman is standing there who while clearly afraid of Crela seems more fascinated and curious about her than afraid. It's at this point that the young woman Winelan states that she has a proposal for Crela, one that she simply finds she can't decline.
Omg, Crela is so freaking adorable! She is self-conscious in a very human way and I found that to be such a great twist on an undead being. But it's not just that, Crela maintains her unlife in the same living humans do she has hobbies, she enjoys a good book, and she likes her home organized and tidy. Finn does an excellent job humanizing her while reminding us that she is certainly not human any longer and I loved that. Winnie is great as well, I love that she's a scientist, I love how there's a lack of judgment from the minute she meets Crela, and I love how Crela is more than a research project from the get-go. Winnie wants to study her yes, but she also wants to help improve her unlife, and that's such a great basis for a relationship.
I really can't wait to read the next book and honestly Ill probably get to it later this week!
