Killer Debt: An Anthology of Murder by Dianna Gunn

Image
I don't even know where to start with this one! Death by MAGA Gator, death by hair color (Im not coloring my hair for awhile), death by Dino, death by Tree...I think you all get it. Some of these were truly laugh out loud hilarious, some were genuinely terrifying (and full disclosure I skipped over the bugs), some were deranged, but they were all a ton of fun. Who knew a book about people getting murdered would be this much fun!?  The Content Warnings though, OMG, they were the absolute best. Plus this is just chock full of simple rage at the tech bros and the holier than though evangelists of the world so if you're looking for a healthy way to vent against the people who are taking your rights away this is an excellent read! Highly recommend whether you're in it for the laughs or the scares!

Barrow Maid by Dani Finn

Image
One evening Crela creeps from her barrow finding two men trying to break in, she silently stalks them killing them both, their corpses will serve as the perfect meal for months. Its at this point she realizes she's not alone, a young woman is standing there who while clearly afraid of Crela seems more fascinated and curious about her than afraid. It's at this point that the young woman Winelan states that she has a proposal for Crela, one that she simply finds she can't decline.  Omg, Crela is so freaking adorable! She is self-conscious in a very human way and I found that to be such a great twist on an undead being. But it's not just that, Crela maintains her unlife in the same living humans do she has hobbies, she enjoys a good book, and she likes her home organized and tidy. Finn does an excellent job humanizing her while reminding us that she is certainly not human any longer and I loved that. Winnie is great as well, I love that she's a scientist, I...

Sabrena Swept Away by Karuna Riazi

Image
After Sabrena's grandmother is diagnosed with dementia her family packs up and moves to Virginia from Brooklyn leaving her friends and her beloved ocean behind. Between the stress of being the new kid at school and having to help with her grandmother, she feels very alone in the world, it doesn't help that she's socially awkward to boot so when one afternoon the sea rises up at her school no less and sweeps her away to a whole new world; one of stories and magic Sabrena is certain she may not have what it takes to save this world and return home. Even if she is the descendant of the great Sinbad.  I loved every minute of this! Sabrena's story was one of believing in yourself and those around you, especially family wrapped up in a fantastic isekai-style adventure! Sebrena herself is honestly a great character and completely reminds me of how I felt being the new kid sometimes three times in one school year. She is painfully shy and consistently undermines her...

Jade Evergreen Polybius by Kara Buchanan

Image
After Jade Evergreen hears the Maidensong she summons the courage to tell her parents what she's always known; that she's a girl. Well, she's a magical girl but she really can't tell her parents that part. Wanting to be as supportive as they can her family packs up and moves to Portland, OR where Jade can start fresh as a girl. This would be great except during a fight with a magical deck of tarot cards her classmate Catherine who just happens to be a journalist discovers all of Jade's secrets and blackmails Jade into letting her tag along on her supernatural battles. So far the enemies the girls have seen Jade come up against have been relatively easy for her to take down, but, after students across Portland start disappearing Jade realizes that this new enemy is on a whole other level. Will she have the strength and the courage to save her classmates before it's too late?  I'd like the next book now! Hooked from page one, hell the first sentenc...

Hexed Vol 1 by Lenore Soleil

Image
As Stella starts her first year at school she has a lot of expectations, that do not include meeting Temperance, a prickly (to say the least) young woman with a lot of baggage who dislikes Stella on the spot. Which, of course means their Dueling instructor teams them up. As an empath Stella has the ability to help Temperance come to terms with the trauma her mother has inflicted on her, but will Temperance have the courage to let her in?  In my misspent youth (six years ago) I was pretty into the Simstagram community, I loved all of these amazing stories that players conjured up for their Sims and spent hours just scrolling through them. The minute I saw the cover of Hexed it immediately reminded me of those stories; the art, the plot, literally everything so for that alone I knew I was going to love this.  However, what really got me was this was a grown up magical academy story. See, I kinda hate magical academy stories. Dark magic, light magic, I don't care ther...

With nothing to lose and everything to gain Katrina sets off to find Jagger.  In the meantime, Krutch and Arkady are once again tracked down and after getting away (by tumbling off a cliff) he finds himself in a weird Mission, with a weird woman who is far too interested in him. After another escape this time from the mission he and Jessica, aka Audra Fay set off for Seba, where Krutch plans to lie low. Audra has other ideas though and Krutch immediately finds himself rubbing elbows with some of the most powerful men in the Grayland's criminal underworld.  Lily believes she can now live among humans so she heads North only to discover her monstrous instincts are not as under control as she believed. After brutally murdering a guard she flees ba...

Love Between Fairy and Devil Book 1 by Jiu Lu Fei Xiang

Image
Xiao Lanhua, an orchid fairy has found herself sharing a body with Dongfang Qingcang the most feared Demon Lord in history! As the two of them fight over everything from whether or not to murder people in cold blood to how to walk correctly they find themselves in an odd sort of symbiotic relationship that may just blossom into more. Or they may just kill each other first! I have wanted to read this since I first watched the Netflix show and while I had expected this review to end up being just a comparison of the show to the book I have to say that would be completely unfair to both of them as they are almost two separate stories. At least with this first book. So while there will be some comparisons it's not going to take up most of this.  I do have to start though with Xiao Lanhua and Dongfang Qingcang because I mean there's just no story without them and while Xiao Lanhua especially is not different than her character in the show she is dare I say it marginally ...

Legend of Exorcism Vol 1 by Fei Tian Ye Xiang

Image
Hongjun grew up in the Taihang Mountains the carefree adopted child of King Chong Ming along with his friend Zhao Zilong a carp yao that failed to cultivate into a human. Hongjun assumed his life would go on like this forever until one day Chong Ming informed him that Hongjun has a mission in the Divine Realm; he must head to Chang'an to join the Department of Exorcism and defeat the Yao King who will be brought back into the world soon. Not wanting to leave but not wanting to upset his adopted father Hongjun heads off the mountain to Chang'an where he will be joined by four other men to stop that yao threatening Chang'an. Unfortunately for them it appears that there were far more yao in Chang'an than they had ever imagined and they seem to be right next to the Emperor's side.  Hongjun must be protected at all costs. That's it, that's review. Kidding, obviously but omg he was so absolutely adorably naive throughout the book that the thought of hi...
