Melinda West: Monster Gunslinger by K.C. Grifant

Image
Melinda West and her partner and lover Lance have finally saved enough money to retire from monster hunting after their last hunt. Finding a weird stone in the mine the centipede infestation had been, they rush back home to Five Peaks and their family Abel and Aunt B. But the happy couple are barely able to finish a meal before they are attacked by a group of soul sucking archanids and while Melinda, Lance, and B survive the confrontation Abel's soul has been stolen. Devastated to learn that it was the very stone Melinda found that allowed the archanids to find them, her and Lance set out on what is hopefully one last ride to save the man who has been a father to both of them.  I thought we agreed that if a book contained things like flaming cows that would be the first line of everyone's review? Alright, fine I know it was piggy bombs but I feel like flaming cows is up there with piggy bombs ya know? Okay seriously though I knew by page two this was going to be ama...

Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint Novel Vol. 1 by singNsong

I'm not going to go into a synopsis here because I've reviewed the manwha and you can find that there. Plus, I feel like while getting new readers to this amazing series would be awesome, but, as someone who has read it I feel like targeting those who have read the manwha as well is important because this is somehow actually better than the manwha. Honestly, I can't believe I'm saying it myself but here we are. It just hits differently without the illustrations. The scene at the beginning in the subway especially, is far more gruesome in this. Dojka comes across as more complex as well. We know he's got some loose morals but seems to be a good person underneath it all in the manwha, but this fully threw that into question. He is a devious bastard and when he says that he is being genuinely selfish it's wholly believable. Everything is just ratcheted up a notch, the tension, the desperation, the violence, all of it.  If you read the manwha you'll ...

Snowglobe 2 by Soyoung Park and Translated by Joungmin Lee Comfort

Image
While the truth behind the Haeris has come out, the truth behind Snowglobe's power has not. Chobahm is dedicated to ensuring that the human-powered plant below Snowglobe is shut down and the Yibonn family stopped but she can't figure out how to do it or at least not on her own. At Fran's wedding though two remarkable things happen; Chobahm meets a mysterious woman in a wheelchair who hands her an even more mysterious business card and then disappears and Chobahm discovers that somehow Bonwhe's grandmother has discovered that Chobahm knows and Chobahm knows that this puts everyone she loves at risk. With no other choice, she will have to turn to her cast members, her friends to take down the Yibonns before they silence her forever.  What a freaking ride! Since we already knew who the bad guys were (which they are way worse than we knew from book one) book two is mostly about how Chobahm, Serin, and the rest of the group are going to take them out. This is obv...

The Hexologists: A Tangle of Time by Josiah Bancroft

Image
Isolde and Warren have had a wonderful night out, but Isolde wants to stop and check in on an artist she has admittedly blown off. Margit was commissioned to create several hexes and she is worried that they are dangerous. Finding the building unlocked Isolde heads upstairs only to find that Margit has been murdered and adding more chaos to an already chaotic situation Det. Broxburn appears suspiciously on the scene, he immediately accuses Isolde of murder. But in the next second, an explosion takes place on the horizon and Isolde finds herself preparing for a night out on the town with her husband... I know a lot of people aren't fans of time traveling but I'm saying give this one a chance! It was a lot of fun and it's not a blatant time travel. It's subtle, there are small shifts that hint at changes to the timeline, plus we the reader know it's been changed where the characters have no idea what's going on. I found it really cleverly done and comp...

Dinghai Fusheng Records Vol. 1 by Fei Tian Ye Xiang

Chen Xing is the last living exorcist charged with stopping the resurrection of Mara. To do this he must find his Protector so after his shifu passes he sets off into the world with only the heart lamp to guide him to find the person who will become the Protector Martial Guard. Not long after he leaves the heart lamp points him to Xiang Shu, who is currently being held prison in Xiangyang, after staging a daring (and mostly lucky) rescue of Xiang Shu Chen Xing assumes things will be smooth sailing from there, turns out that Xiang Zhu wants nothing to do with him though and sets off on his own. As the resentment builds in The Divine Land Chen Xing knows he must find some way to convince Xiang Shu to work with him or the entire world is doomed.  Oh wow! I just finished book 2 of Legend of Exorcism which was absolutely amazing so I kinda figured this would be good but it was exceptional! Honestly, I thought at first that Xiang had maybe gone a little too hard on the enemie...

Legend of Exorcism Vol. 2 by Fe Tian Ye Xiang

Image
After solving the fox case The Department of Exorcism sees their fortunes changed and Li Jinglong becomes a favorite of the Emperor. Unfortunately, this also means that the Court of Judicial Review starts dumping seemingly unsolvable cases in their laps. At first it seems like all of the cases are just politically tricky to prosecute and Li Jinglong insists that they be sent back to the Judicial Review. Hongjun, however, stumbles upon a murder case that won't leave him alone and Li Jinglong finally gives in and allows Hongjun to investigate. At first this leads to nothing but within hours of Hongjun leaving the murder victims son, Qin Wu, brutally slaughters the man suspected of killing his father. Women, children, the elderly, everyone. Thats when the men of The Department of Exorcism start noticing a pattern of brutal murders being carried out across Chang'an all of them pointing to being the mastermind of the Yao King. Determined to finally take the king down the...

A Lethal Engagement by April Skelly

Image
Cora Beaumont is setting off on the maiden voyage of the airship Lady Air, the largest ever made by her father's company with her fiancé Terrance Tristan, who is the younger son of a Duke. The voyage is supposed to be a way for her and Terrance to get to know each other better, however, the very first night on the ship Cora finds herself in middle of a murder investigation with Terrance's older brother Nicholas and as the bodies keep piling up Cora and Nicholas find that even in the middle of a serial killers spree that maybe Cora is marrying the wrong Tristan.  When I've had a bad week murder mysteries are my go-to for reading and in all honesty, the more tropes the better and in terms of the romance A Lethal Engagement couldn't have been a better choice. While Nicholas and Cora come across as very cookie-cutter characters at the beginning of the book as the story progresses. The evolution of their relationship was, I found, to be completely natural as they...

Hell bent on saving her brother from himself she confronts him only to find that he isn't alone; something is haunting him, haunting all of Daunderhead and if Netta doesn't find a way to stop these ghosts her brother my be lost to them forever.  I loved Inheriting Her Ghosts, it was such a well written story and Eudora quickly became a new favorite character, so I had high...

The Bone Raiders by Jackson Ford

The Rakada a group of Raiders in the Tapestry are wholly against this idea but as the Khan's soldiers continue to take out other Raiders they know that at this point their only option is to flee The Tapestry and give up everything they've ever known and loved. Sayana, a princess turned Rakada refuses to give up and hatches a truly last ditch plan: kidnap a hunter with an extraordinary gift for taming animals and have her tame an Araatan for them, the Khan would never dream of taking on a giant fire-breathing lizard. Unfortunately for Sayana nothing goes as planned.  This book was a blast from beginning to end! Jackson has created a truly unique fantasy setting with some exceptionally lovable characters. And yes prepare for some character gushing because omg I *loved* them all!! Sayana, of course, is my favorite, she i...

Another Mini Manga Post!!

Without Further Ado The Manga: The Civil War has ended and Norachiyo has returned to life as a stray, he wanders the country side looking for his final resting place while protecting those strays who find themselves at the mercy of "kept" cats and catnip-pushing druglords.  This series had me at "Catnip Druglords". Outside of the hilarious translations of human issues to cats this was an absolutely fantastic tale of life as a ronin told through a cat. Norachiyo is definitely not what I'd call a good guy though. He hasn't really set out to save the strays (peasants) from the kept cats (upper classes) he just happens to have a code of honor that he cant ignore. He also seems to possibly be immortal and there's a mysterious priest who seems to know a bit about Norachiyo's past.  And look seriously this is bloody and violent. If you're looking for a cutesy tale about a cat samurai this is not it. Yes, its funny in some parts but it is def...

Mini Manga/Manhwa Post!

Without further ado: The Manga Iruma is living in the streets when he is adopted by Don Sullivan head of the Babel Family Mafia. As the Don's grandson Iruma lives a pretty spoiled life surrounded by his teacher Kalego and bodyguard Opera. Now, at 14 though Iruma has been appointed second in command of the whole family and he's realizing he's got a lot to learn still! Omg I am not sure how Hiroja managed to make Iruma more adorable than it already was but he did and I am in absolute love! Hiroja managed to take everything wonderful about the original and drop it into a completely different world without disrupting really anything. Honestly, if I didn't know it I wouldn't have realized this was written by someone else.  I am definitely going to be continuing this series! As always thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha for the eArc! Rita is the world's finest assassin. Or at least she was, after finally being arrested the government makes a deal with her; sh...
